A Smile She Cannot See

With Glaucoma comes blindness she was warned, and she’d feared the day her world would diminish, the day she’d become helpless. Now it’s here. Now everything is black, black as the darkest night of the soul. Her heart, her hope, freezes.

She’d fallen asleep able to see, but woken to nothing. No glimmer from streetlights, no glow from her alarm clock. Her partner smiles, a smile she cannot see. He needs her to need him, so he has masked the windows, removed the lightbulbs, and eliminated anything that emits light. He hears her wail.

‘I’m here for you darling, I’m here.’
