Advent
Each December night a different doorway. An advent gift in each from someone unknown and unseen. Reindeer socks, mince pies, a beanie hat…. Even a new coat last night in the doorway of the final shop in the row. Number 23.
Christmas Eve, silent snow falling, his beard frozen stiff. Wondering where to sleep tonight, as the young family approached.
The child handed him the final gift. A carrot. “To put by our fireplace. For Rudolph. Your bed’s all ready and there’s presents in the morning.” The parents said “Only if you’d like to”.
The bearded man remembered how to smile.
