Alpha to Omega by Hilary Ashford

The attack comes out of nowhere. He has noticed the growing tension, the sideways looks, the inability to meet his stare, but the challenge still takes him by surprise.

Although he has fought before, this time his experience is no match for the arrogant recklessness of youth. He battles hard, but knows he is beaten. Rather than submit to his adversary he turns and walks away, his grey muzzle held as high as his injuries allow.

His wounds are painful, exacerbated by betrayal. His mournful howl of farewell goes unanswered as he limps off on his solitary path into the forest.
