Tails of the City

The pitter-patter of small rodent feet softened as they touched upon the grass. The hard cement was left behind; the outline of the city could be seen in the distance, like jigsaw pieces illuminated by the night sky. Tiny rat lungs filled with air and let out a small squeak of satisfaction, back to the natural order of things, predator, and prey. She reached out a tentative paw, but the ground fell away. Fleshy fingers wrapped themselves around her small furry body. ‘Found her!’ the man exclaimed, dropping her into a cage filled with bits of torn newspaper. ‘You’re safe now.’
