World War 3

There were a few times when it seemed like it was getting close to something like this. Around seven years ago, maybe, a new nervousness simmered beneath the jokes, the most sceptical among us quietened.


Or, I don’t know, maybe that was just more unfounded, paper-selling sensationalism. They couldn’t have known what was coming then. And anyway, things soon settled.


It always sounded ridiculous, that’s the thing. The wars that came before, they had this…this gravitas. Men on battlefields, on the seas, in the skies.


History couldn’t repeat itself. And, of course, it didn’t.


What came to us was much worse.
