Following on from the success of our #FlashFiction101 competition we have been planning a follow up competition and supporting journal to further promote the work of our entrants as well as the work of our company. The quarterly journal, CHIASMUS will be edited by Dr Charley Barnes (Creative Associate) and Ben Humphrey (Artistic Director) and will feature three winning entries from the Chiasmus Competition as well as articles, features and other creative work and news in an attractive and professionally printed journal. 

CHIASMUS COMPETITION

We're looking for your stories and will soon be welcoming entries to our Chiasmus Short Story Competition for our September edition. Each story must be 1001 words exactly. No more, no less! Entries will be judged by the editors and featured in the print journal. 

Entry to the competition will be £3.50 per story and entrants will receive a discount on pre-ordered copies of Chiasmus.

RULES

  1. Authors must be 16 years of age or over at the time of submitting their story.

  2. Entry is open to everyone; locally, nationally and internationally, but entries must be written in English. 

  3. All entries must be the original and individual work of entrant.

  4. Entries must not have been previously published in print or online, been broadcast or won a prize.

  5. Entries can be and genre or theme. They must also be for adult or young adult readers. Non-fiction and fiction written for children under 13 years of age is not eligible. We are hoping to bring further competitions that focus on writing for children soon.

  6. Simultaneous submission is permitted. Should your fiction win a prize or be published elsewhere, please get in touch so that we may remove your entry from consideration. 

  7. Authors retain full worldwide copyright during and after the competition has closed and publication has taken place.

  8. Entrants may submit as many entries as they like, but may only submit each individual piece of work once in a twelve month period. 

  9. The three winning entries will be published in the Chiasmus journal and submission of work into the competition grants Tortive Theatre Ltd permission to publish said work in accordance with aims and objectives set out here. 

 

FORMATTING

1. The exact length of the story must be 1001 words, title excluded.

2. Entries should be typed in a plain legible font.

3. All entries (excluding the annual competition shortlist) will be read and judged anonymously. Please do not include your name, address, email, telephone number or any personally identifying information on any page of your uploaded file.

4. Acceptable file types are odt, doc, docx, txt and pdf.

5. The file name must be the title of your piece. If your piece does not have a title, then the file name must be the first five words of your story.

SUBMISSIONS

1. Submission can only be made online, using the Submissions Form below. No postal entries will be accepted. 

2. No alterations or corrections may be made after you have submitted your work. You may remove your work from consideration but you will not be able to enter the same work again for a period of 12 months. 

3. There is no limit to the number of entries and entrant may submit.

JUDGE

DR CHARLEY BARNES (C.S BARNES)

C.S. Barnes is an academic, crime writer, and poet based in Worcester, UK. She was appointed as Worcestershire's Poet Laureate for 2019-20 and is a lecturer at no fewer than three Universities in English Literature and Creative Writing. 

Her crime writing covers everything from psychological thrillers to good old-fashioned detective work. She is currently working on her fourth novel. 

 

Charley is also the Managing Director of Sabotage Reviews and the Writer-in-Residence for The Swan Theatre, Huntingdon Hall and Worcester Rep.

JUDGE

BEN HUMPHREY

Ben is a director, writer and actor, based in Edinburgh, UK. He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and as formerly the Artistic Director for the The Swan Theatre, Huntingdon Hall and Worcester Repertory Company. He is now Artistic Director of Tortive Theatre as well as Senior Creative Consultant to the National Trust for Scotland. 

He was a Module Leader at the University of Worcester and is a specialist lecturer at Staffordshire University. 

His directing work has been seen all over the globe and he has written a number of plays, monologues and commissions both for theatre and radio.
