ABOUT THE PLAY

Tortive Theatre is delighted to present the UK premier of Mickle Maher’s absurdist masterpiece, The Hunchback Variations.

Noted composer, Ludwig Van Beethoven and noted Hunchback, Quasimodo team up to chair a panel discussion on sound design, specifically their search for the baffling and impossible cue described at the end of Anton Checkhov’s The Cherry Orchard.

This brilliant work, directed by Rebecca Garron follows the pair’s frustrated efforts, complicated further by the fact that they are both quite deaf, with hilarious and possibly meaningful results.

The Hunchback Variations is without a doubt one of contemporary theatre’s most masterful pieces of absurdist comedy, and stars the incredible German actors, Harald Djurken and Martin John Mills as the unlikely duo in search of a sound.

The production will run at the Edinburgh Fringe 2024, which will be this play's UK Premiere having been produced in both the USA and Europe.

"To be able to bring such an incredible play to life at the greatest arts festival in the world is an honour. But for it to be its first outing in the UK is something very special. When I first saw this play in Germany I was captivated from start to finish. It is hilarious, thought-provoking and intriguing in equal measure...an absurdist triumph." Ben Humphrey, UK Producer.
